SIP Trunking Gaining on T1s for Business Access

SIP trunking is making significant inroads into the T1’s hold on the business access market, according to a new report from analyst group Infonetics Research. SIP trunking is gaining fast on the venerable T1; while many businesses who’ve adopted premises-based VoIP will continue to depend on legacy access technologies (usually a T1) to link to the PSTN, Infonetics predicts SIP trunking will be the next most common trunking service by 2012. This growth is driven by SIP trunking’s ability to centralize applications over a converged access pipe, making management simpler and more flexible, while enabling multimedia communication.
“There is a perception in the market place that SIP trunking is all about cost savings, and to a certain degree that’s true: SIP trunking allows organizations to build a more efficient trunking infrastructure, thus lowering their monthly telecom expenditures,” said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research. “But service providers should take note that when it comes to selecting a SIP trunking service provider, the most important criterion is reliability, not cost.”
The report, “SIP Trunking Deployment Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey,” polled 100 U.S. and Canadian business IT managers with purchasing authority at companies with at least 100 employees, focusing on SIP trunking deployment models, spending, and service provider and vendor selection criteria.
